The College of Graduate Studies offers and oversees two summer programs. The SHP (Summer Health Professions) program enables MUSC MD students to work in research labs on the MUSC campus for a 10-week program. The program culminates in a symposium in which students present their research project.
The SURP (Summer Undergraduate Research Program) is a signature program of the CGS. Undergraduate students (usually rising juniors and seniors) from all over the country come to MUSC for a 10-week, research intensive experience. A customized didactic program (3 h/wk) introduces students to foundational and cutting-edge concepts in biomedical science and either neuroscience, cancer biology or cardiovascular biology. The keystone of the program, however, is an immersive research experience in an MUSC laboratory. A number of social events foster a sense of community; students present their research in a celebratory symposium at the end of the program. SURP participants can receive up to 15 credits at their home institution.
