Professional development opportunities, such as the Three Minute Thesis competition and the Accelerate to Industry (A2i) program, further enhance students' readiness for diverse career paths.

Why Should You Get a Ph.D.?

Matt Greseth, Ph.D.
Matthew Greseth, Ph.D.
Assistant Director, Graduate Education

"You get to be an expert. People will look to you for opinions and insight into your area of focus. You get to be the first to learn a new piece of information. There is something satisfying about being the first to know something and then sharing it with the community. You get to act like a 5-year-old and ask questions all day (i.e., the 5 W's of journalism: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How). Rather than only acting like a 5-year-old and asking questions for other people to answer, you ask the why questions to yourself and set out to answer them, leading to breakthroughs in new fields."

Alexa Corker, Ph.D.
Candidate in the DeLeon-Pennell Lab

"I chose to do a Ph.D. to have a direct impact on the health care system and patient health. Advancing research for patient health allows me to feel like I am contributing in a meaningful way to society while making a difference in my community!"

Student Organizations & Advocacy

Getting involved in student organizations is a crucial part of the graduate experience at MUSC. These groups provide opportunities for advocacy, leadership development, and networking, allowing students to make meaningful contributions within the university and beyond. Whether through professional societies, service-oriented initiatives, or student government, graduate students can connect with peers, gain valuable experience, and help shape the future of their academic community.

Life in Charleston

Located in the historic seaport city of Charleston, MUSC provides students with access to a city renowned for its architecture, cultural festivals, and coastal beauty. The annual Spoleto Arts Festival, numerous museums, and a vibrant nightlife offer ample opportunities for relaxation and cultural enrichment. The pleasant subtropical climate and nearby beaches and rivers make Charleston ideal for outdoor activities such as water sports and camping.
