3MT 2025

The College of Graduate Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) proudly presents the third annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on February 4, 2025.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition was founded by the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, in 2008 and has since become a global academic challenge. This event challenges graduate students to present their research in just three minutes, using only one static slide and no props—an exercise in clarity, confidence, and communication.

The winner of the MUSC 3MT Competition goes on to represent MUSC at the regional competition.

Are you ready to showcase your research and make an impact?

What is the 3MT Challenge?

The Three Minute Thesis competition challenges students to explain their research in just three minutes, using only one static slide and no props.

  • One static PowerPoint slide: No animations, transitions, or video.
  • No additional props, notes, or electronic aids.
  • One continuous presentation: Engaging, clear, and jargon-free.

Why Compete in 3MT?

The Three Minute Thesis competition is more than just a contest — it’s an opportunity to develop essential skills that will benefit you throughout your career.

  • Enhance Your Communication Skills: Learn to present complex ideas in a clear, engaging way.
  • Gain Recognition: Compete for prizes and a chance to represent MUSC at regional competitions.
  • Boost Your Career: Improve your ability to present to funding agencies, industry, and conference audiences.
  • Join a Global Network: 3MT is an internationally recognized competition, offering a platform to share your research with a global audience.

Who Can Compete?

The MUSC College of Graduate Studies invites all graduate students actively engaged in research to participate.

  • Open to master’s and doctoral students across all six MUSC colleges.
  • Students must present original research or a research project they are actively involved in.
  • Those in the final stages of their research are especially encouraged to apply.

Judging Criteria

The best 3MT presentations aren’t necessarily about how complex the research is—it’s about how well it’s communicated.

Judges will assess presentations based on:

  • Comprehension & Content: Was the research clearly explained? Was its significance made evident?
  • Engagement & Communication: Did the speaker captivate the audience and convey enthusiasm for their research?
  • Structure & Delivery: Was the presentation well-organized, engaging, and easy to follow?
