Leading Innovation in Healthcare

Research sparks discoveries. Discoveries then form the foundation for medical devices, treatments, and new approaches to care. Looking beyond, these advancements promote healthier communities across our state and the globe.

The Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Graduate Studies fuels these developments by training the next generation of biomedical and clinical researchers—individuals ready to redefine what’s possible and reflecting the diversity and inclusivity of our community and nation.

Collaborative programs empower our students and ignite transformative results. Under the guidance of our distinguished faculty, as well as through partnerships with other MUSC colleges, students lead experiments pushing the boundaries of where science improves human health. Our graduates go on to encourage progress in academia, government, and industry, contributing to what the world knows about molecular and structural biology, clinical research, genomics, and human disease.

We intertwine this forward-looking perspective with support and guidance. This begins with our Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), exposing bachelor’s candidates to the processes and possibilities of biomedical and clinical research, as well as our NIH-funded Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), geared toward those traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. For master’s, Ph.D., and postdoctoral candidates, career development and an enriching, applied environment pave the way toward roles questioning the impossible and breaking new ground.

See how the College of Graduate Studies serves South Carolina and beyond through our faculty, research, and students ready to engineer change.

Alyson Black

In only two years, I noticed drastic differences in the way I think about science, myself and the community. Through the wide variety of courses, great support from faculty members, and social activities, I am maturing into the scientist I’ve always envisioned myself to be.

Being a graduate student and being curious are synonymous. While at the Medical University of South Carolina my curiosity has been cultivated and nurtured.

Brandon Young, Ph.D. student

Brandon Young

Attending MUSC has unlocked a world of opportunities. In my first year as a graduate student, I presented my research at international meetings in Charleston, Madison, Milan, and Vancouver. I cannot imagine a more exciting, rewarding, and cultivating environment to train in.
