The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Neuroscience at MUSC is a residential program designed to help you build the knowledge, research experience and scientific independence needed for a career in neuroscience. You’ll study the brain and nervous system across molecular, cellular, circuit and behavioral levels while exploring areas such as addiction neuroscience, neurodegenerative disease, neurodevelopmental disorders and neuro oncology.

The Ph.D. in Neuroscience prepares you to investigate how the nervous system shapes health, behavior and disease. In this residential, research intensive program, you will build scientific independence through rigorous study, faculty mentorship, laboratory rotations and sustained research spanning molecular, cellular, systems and behavioral neuroscience.
Through coursework, scientific literature and immersive research, you will learn to frame original questions, design rigorous studies and select experimental, analytical or computational methods that fit the problem. You will strengthen your ability to interpret complex data, evaluate evidence, communicate findings and adapt your approach as new results guide discovery.
You will learn in a collaborative academic health sciences community with space to explore and refine your interests. Laboratory rotations help you compare research settings and mentoring approaches before selecting a faculty mentor. Seminars, journal clubs, core facilities and constructive feedback support your growth from guided learning toward independent scholarship.

No single metric is used to assess applicants, but rather a broader picture of the candidate’s equalities is considered by our admissions committee. As a guideline, candidates with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater are more likely to be considered favorably.

If offered a position, and the applicant has only submitted an unofficial transcript evaluation, the candidate will be required to provide an official transcript and evaluation before any further consideration of that applicant will be given.
A language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English. Scores must not be more than two years old. Exceptions can be made if a student has attended a United States institution for an extended period. An exception might also be made for students in a foreign institution that uses English as the primary language for instruction, however, these are made on a case-by-case basis.

The Cost of Attendance, or COA, estimates the total educational expenses for an enrollment period. The information below reflects the 2026-27 academic year. The COA includes direct costs, such as tuition and fees, billed by the university, as well as indirect costs you may need to plan for, including housing, food, transportation, books and other personal expenses.
For most admitted residential Ph.D. students, the COA does not reflect what you should expect to pay out of pocket. Tuition, health insurance and a stipend are generally provided as part of the student's funding package. MUSC offers scholarships for which you may be eligible. Some are awarded based on academic achievement; others are awarded based on community service, for example. However, the majority of scholarships awarded at MUSC are based on financial need. This means that these scholarships are only awarded to students who need some financial assistance to cover the cost of tuition and fees. If you would like to be considered for a financial need-based scholarship, you must have an up-to-date Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file. Make sure you list the Medical University of South Carolina on your FAFSA form, along with MUSC's code: 003438. We encourage you to submit your FAFSA as early as possible. The Rinker Lab is a preclinical, basic science lab that explores the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie alcohol dependence and stress-related disorders using a murine model of excessive alcohol consumption that emulates aspects of this human medical condition of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The lab has several main projects that focus on stress system dysregulation in alcohol dependence, cortical mechanisms of excessive alcohol drinking, and thalamic regulation of reward seeking. We utilize in vivo calcium imaging to track neural activity during alcohol drinking and behavioral tasks, as well as chemo- and optogenetic approaches to manipulate neural activity, and basic wet lab techniques, like immunohistochemistry, western immunoblotting, and slice electrophysiology. The overall goal of the lab is to help understand the etiology of AUD and identify new pharmacotherapeutics targets for drug development.
Dr. Mulholland studies neuroadaptations induced by in-vivo and in-vitro models of chronic alcohol exposure and repeated stress experiences.
