About the Symposium
Cell biology is the study of the cell, the fundamental unit of life. It underpins advances in medicine ranging from fertility science and cancer research to regenerative medicine and AI-enabled discovery. As one of MUSC’s longstanding strengths, cell biology provides an ideal gateway for students exploring careers in science and healthcare. Dr. Ernest Everett Just helped shape the discipline, and this symposium extends that legacy by welcoming undergraduate students from colleges and universities throughout South Carolina to explore research, education, and careers in the biomedical sciences
We are collaborating with colleges and universities across South Carolina to promote student participation, provide registration support and integrate the symposium into campus programming.

Dr. Ernest Everett Just
Dr. Ernest Everett Just (1883–1941) was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and became one of the most influential cell biologists of the twentieth century. His pioneering studies on fertilization, embryonic development, and the cell surface helped lay the foundation for modern cell and developmental biology. This symposium honors both his scientific achievements and his commitment to mentoring future generations.
This Year's Theme: Artificial Intelligence
In 1939, Just argued that cells must be understood in the context of whole biological systems. Modern systems biology, computational modeling, and artificial intelligence now allow scientists to investigate living systems using the kind of integrative perspective he championed. Artificial intelligence does not replace scientific insight; rather, it helps researchers recognize patterns, integrate complex data, and ask new questions at unprecedented scale. Scientific discovery requires curiosity, resilience, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility. Through presentations and discussions, participants will gain insight into both the opportunities and challenges that accompany careers in research and healthcare.
